The first thing they show is when they’re picking the names and choose the ladies first because it shows how they don’t have faith in them to survive and the way the take the name out makes it even worse because it was in a “petty” way.
. After Katniss’ sister is chosen, the way she stood up and acted was not the way they would normally act in their society. After Katniss volunteers, you see how the boys and girls are on separate sides and that shows segregation between genders.

If you keep watching after they announce Katniss’ name the girls start a solute to her because they know what to expect in a society like this because that’s the way they’ve been taught. When Effie tells Peeta and Katniss to shake hands after Peeta is chosen, it proves the way they look at each other that the two genders do not interact often.

At the end of the scene when Effie says, “Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favor.” She knows that the odds are not ever in the girls favor because almost all of them are not taught to hunt and provide for their family like Katniss is.
